You should definitely pursue Sandman past the first volume. Like so
many other series, the first volume is one of the weakest. The first
volume was hindered by DC Universe tie-in stuff and origin stories.
Gaiman got away from that very quickly thereafter.

The second volume contains a longer Dream-centric story that is more
the norm for the series. The third is a collection of single-issue
stories, at which the series also excelled. The fourth is probably one
of the high points of the series, but by that point you'll have most
definitely made up your mind about whether or not you want to pursue
the series.

Your local library will very probably have them all, so you can even
read them for free.
