For the last four days my life had been a living hell.
For starters, it felt like someone had shoved a rabid ferret into my
stomach and the little bastard wanted out very, very, very bad.
For seconds, I was now gainfully employed. Against my will.
It's not that I didn't want a job. I did. I'd been unemployed since a
robot kicked my ass and threw me into an asylum last October. I hadn't
gone six months without a job since before I was legally able to work.
And while I wasn't exactly eager to return to China Garden (cheap late
night take out where you got what you paid for), I certainly wasn't
too keen on the new job.
Public relations for the mayor's office.
Romanov's lacky.
I got to make the excuses when he messed up.
Yea.

"What?" he croaked into his expensive tether to the outside world. He
was answered on the other end by a deep, rhythmic growl that he grew
to both respect and admire since he first was treated to it.
"Channel seven," it answered back.
Nodding to no one in particular, Jack stabbed his free hand into the
blanket folds of his rickety futon and came out holding a television
remote. He punched in a sequence of soft, broken in buttons turning on
the t.v., the cable, and the surround sound system in that order. The
blank eye of his big screen blinked once then revealed a well dressed
newscaster mechanically reciting the mid day news.
"...although unavailable for comment, last night's audacious act of
vandalism is believed to be a part of the escalating campaign against
the City Housing Authority's negligence of the urban housing project's
re****tedly dire circumstances..."
One eye on the screen, Jack couldn't help but crack a smile.

"Yer lyin," Irwin declared.
"S'worth... takin th'chance?"
Irwin looked at Ginger who was exerting all her willpower wi****ng
Irwin to take the chance and fetch the money, if there was any. That
way she could watch over Victor and keep him alive long enough to pay
her off. If possible she would be gone before Irwin returned.
"Where is it?" Irwin asked.
"Get some paper... you gotta write it..." Victor mumbled
Irwin wrote the information down in his legible-only-to-him scrawl and
left without a word to Ginger. So much for the late nooner, Ginger
thought happily. Once Irwin's truck had pulled out and driven away
Ginger turned to Victor.
"Is there any money, Victor. I won't tell no one either way," Ginger
said.
"Yeah..." Victor mumbled.
"Is Irwin going to be able to find it?"
Victor fell perfectly still and said nothing.
