Lister nearly jumped out of his skin, at the sound of
Rimmer's motivator/cum alarm clock, going off.
He had only, had the best part of an hour and thirty
three minutes, worth of sleep, and he knew, that he
would have to force himself, to get up, But if he
could get away, with another five minutes, worth of
sleep, he would! And Holly's little briefing, would
just have to wait! Surely, she wouldn't begrudge him,
of another five minutes, worth of shut eye, when it
actually came down to it, at the end of the day?!
And with that, Lister drew up his knees, to his chest,
which would remind him, to stir himself, in five minutes,
and it would definitely ensure, that he would definitely,
go back, into a deep slumber, for the moment, anyhow.
But Lister, was rather naive, where Rimmer's motivator/
/cum alarm clock, was concerned, which kept on, going
off. And he was too far away, from the table, that it was
on, for him, to flick the switch, that would disable it, for
once and for all!
However, Lister was determined, to ignore it, and he
closed his eyes, as firmly, as he could. But no matter,
how hard, he tried, he just could not ignore, that irritating
beeping sound! And Lister soon realised, that he had got,
no choice, in the matter, but to get off, Rimmer's bunk.
Lister wiped the dust, off him, as best, as he could. But his
hands, were absolutely saturated, with dust, and he went
and washed his hands, very quickly, in the bathroom, of the
Sleeping quarters.
Lister felt awful, there was a terrible taste in his mouth, which
was definitely one, of the signs and effects, of not getting enough
sleep.
Without any further ado, Lister left the Sleeping quarters, and
made his way, to the Science Room. He had already made his
decision, not to go, to Kryten's quarters, to see if he was alright,
after what had happened, the other night, and whether, he was
up and ready, to make his way, to the Science Room, to be
briefed, by Holly, where their current position, was concerned.
Lister, was extremely worried, where Kryten's welfare, was
concerned, naturally. But he assumed, that his maxi recharging unit,
would soon release, Kryten, and that he would meet up, with his
fellow Dwarfer's, in the Science Room, as originally agreed.
Lister slowly made his way, into the filthy and dilapidated corridor,
with caution. There was no obvious sign, of any activity, on the ship,
whatsoever. Apart, from the scratching noises, that the rats, were
making, of course! The very thought, of the rats, been up and about,
outside his quarters, and quite possibly, inside his quarters, made him
shudder, to his very core! And, Lister knew full-well, that Kryten,
wouldn't have had, the Skutters, cleaning up, the corridor, and repairing,
the damage to the corridor's, roof, until he had fully recharged, himself,
for another ten hours, at the very least, via his maxi recharging unit,
which
was something, that Lister, would definitely, have to take up, with him,
more or less, immediately, when he eventually, made his acquaintance,
with him, in the Science Room, once again.
Lister made his way into the lift, which would take him, directly, into
the
corridor, which led into, the Science Room. And Lister, suddenly began,
to feel, rather sad, when he cast his thoughts, back to all, of the happy
times, that he had spent, with his fellow Dwarfer's, in The Science Room.
They had certainly, had, their fair share, of hair-raising experiences, in
that Science Room, over the years!
Polymorph: Episode III: Red Dwarf III
It had all started, after the Polymorph had been discovered,
by Holly. And, she had decided, that the Science Room, was
a far more, organised and sophisticated, and far more compact,
area of the ship, than the old rundown, primitive Drive Room.
And therefore, she could collate, all of the ships Scientific data,
in one fell swoop, which meant, that she would have to run through,
all of her database files, which usually wasted, a lot of time, into the
bargain, which was something, they could not afford to lose,
especially where locating, the Polymorph, was concerned! And,
there was every Scientific facility, under the Sun, in that Science
Room, and it was situated, in a much warmer area, of the ship,
than the Drive Room, which was very draughty, indeed, at the best
of times!
The Polymorph had attacked the Dwarfer's, one by one, robbing
Lister of his fear, by posing, as a shami kebab, a pair of boxer
shorts (I don't want to go into great detail, where the incident,
with Kryten's groinal attachment, with Lister, was concerned!),
and finally, a snake, which suddenly turned into a gigantic armoured
plated killing machine! The Cat, was robbed of his vanity, because
the Polymorph, had turned, into a beautiful woman, who had
supposedly, been quite free, with her sexual favours! I will say no
more! Kryten had been robbed of his guilt, by posing, as Rimmer,
himself! And the final insult, as far, as Rimmer, was concerned, was
finding Lister, in quite a compromising position, with his Mother, in
the Science Room!
An emotionally crippled, Red Dwarf crew, had wanted to defeat,
the Polymorph. Rimmer had got Holly, to change his image, by
turning him, into a modern version of Jean Paul Sartre, who had
launched his Committee, which he had christened: - "CLITORIS",
which was an acronym, for the "Committee For the Liberation and
Integration of Terrifying Organisms and Their Rehabilitation Into
Society", and the first launch of "CLITORIS' ", first campaign, was
to hit the creature, with a major leaflet campaign! - "Chameleonic Life
Forms, No Thanks!". The second choice, of name, for Rimmer's
Committee, was - "The League Against Salivating Monsters!". Lister
had just wanted, to "Nut the Smegger into oblivion!", the Cat, was far
too oblivious, and shattered, and defeated, to care, anymore, because
his appearance, now represented, a very scruffy, and drunken version,
of himself! That scruffy and drunken version of the Cat, in question, was
a forerunner of Duane Dibbley! Please refer to Emohawk: Polymorph II,
Episode IV, Red Dwarf VII, and a very special, one off, Red Dwarf
Tenth Anniversary episode, called: Can't Smeg, Won't Smeg. And
therefore, he felt, that, as he was so unrecognisable, and worthless, and
that, he was far, too unimportant, to have an opinion! And Kryten, had
turned, into a mercenary, because he imagined, that he could buy his
freedom, by handing, over the others! And even though, Holly had been,
totally, unaffected, by the Polymorph's influence. Her image, on the
computer screens, had been, deliberately frozen, by the Dwarfer's,
themselves! And therefore, as she was temporarily, unable to communicate,
with them, she was no longer, capable of reasoning, with them!
Fortunately however, the Polymorph, was eventually, defeated by
the bazookoid's heat-seekers, which had originally, become trapped,
behind a door, in the Cargo bay's, storage area, by the Cat, who had
somehow, become an unwilling victim, of the bazookoid's heat-seekers,
earlier on! And as the door, had been opened, by the emotionally stripped,
Dwarfer's, who had forgotten all about, letting off, the bazookoid's
heat-seekers, in the first place, the first thing, that they sought out,
was
the
Polymorph, itself! And now, that the Polymorph, was defeated, for once
and for all, the Dwarfer's emotions, soon came back, once again! And a
deeply ashamed, Kryten offered to commit suicide, on their behalf! But
Lister, would not hear of that! And therefore, the Dwarfer's lived, to
fight, another day!
Or did they? Because as they started to make their way back, to their
quarters, a second version of Lister, suddenly put in, an appearance.
And the expression, on the second version, of Lister's face, was one,
of sheer evil! And another Polymorph, suddenly made, an appearance!
I had heard a rumour, that the second Polymorph, had taken a tour, of
the Dwarf, and that, it had explored, Lister's sock drawer, and it had
disguised itself, as one of Lister's socks! And, the Polymorph had waited,
for Lister to find it, but because centuries, can pass, before Lister,
even
considers, changing his socks, the poor Polymorph, soon died of
starvation!
And when the Dwarfer's, became stranded in deep space, on Starbug,
they became acquainted, with the Emohawk, which is a domesticated
Polymorph, as it turns out! But that is another story, or is it?! We will
just have to wait and see, won't we?!
And there was also the incident, when one of the Skutters, had run amok,
and had caused, over two thousand wiring faults, and it had turned the
ship,
into an enormous booby trap. And a certain little cherub, who had been
ordered, not to touch, anything electrical, courtesy of Rimmer, in the
Science
Room, had only gone, and operated, a food dispenser, which because, of the
faulty wiring system, had somehow, gone and accidentally, activated, the
self-destruct system, instead!
Back in the Science Room, however, Holly did her level best, to calm
everyone down, by admitting, that only the Captain, and the Senior
Officers, could avert, a major catastrophe. And despite, the fact, that
the Captain and the Senior Officers, were all dead, she had never, got
round, to updating the system! Fortunately however, help was on hand,
courtesy of Kryten, who during his time, on the Nova 5, had been involved,
in a mind swap experiment. It had been a total failure of course, but he
had worked out, what had gone wrong, since then!
A rather reluctant, Lister had agreed, especially, as a kind and
concerned,
Rimmer had offered him, some Fatherly comfort - "The worst that can
happen to you, is that you will spend, the rest of your life, as a
mindless,
gibbering vegetable - and how long, will that be?!". After a mind enema
(a very long and lethal looking needle), had been inserted, into Lister's
head,
he was given, the voice and mind, of Executive Officer Carole Brown, who
had ordered, the destruct sequence. Unfortunately however, Kryten's sudden
brainwave, did not exactly go, according to plan, and there was a right
panic,
on, where the Boyz from the Dwarf, were concerned! Fortunately however,
for all concerned, after the countdown, to the explosion, had finished,
nothing
happened, with the exception, of Lister's milk shake and a crispy bar,
cherubically
and seraphically, popping, out of the food dispenser! And, as it turned
out,
Holly
had kindly informed, her fellow Dwarfer's, that there hadn't been a bomb,
after
all, and that, she had got rid of it, ages ago! She had just forgotten, to
mention it,
that was all! And the Cat, had kindly informed her - "Just remember this,
you're
getting my underwear bill, buddy!".
Unfortunately however, the mind swap, had given Rimmer, an
idea, and he conned Lister, into swapping his body, with his,
just so, that he could exercise it, for him, in order to lose some
weight! It had all ended, in disaster, of course, because Rimmer,
had been denied, all of the pleasures of the flesh, for far too long,
which had caused him, to go overboard, where eating, drinking
alcohol and smoking, were concerned! Lister was soon wise,
to his tricks, of course, and he had demanded his body back, which
had suddenly gained two stone, and not to mention, the sudden
growth of breasts! Unfortunately however, Rimmer wasn't satisfied,
and he had somehow, managed to persuade Kryten, to chloroform,
poor Mr Lister! And poor Kryten had found it, a little bit hard, to
understand, why Mr Lister, had agreed, to another mind swap, with
Mr Rimmer, especially, when he had struggled, so much, when he had
applied, the chloroform pad, to his face!
In the end, Lister and the Cat, had to chase after Rimmer, in
Blue Midget, as he had done a runner, in Starbug, and as he
had been showing off, in the cockpit, because he had been, so
cocky, and so overly confident, that he had escaped, from his fellow
Dwarfer's, pursuit of him, in Blue Midget, on a rocky planet, that
he hadn't concentrated, on piloting Starbug, properly! And he had
crashed, into a rocky outcrop. Lister hadn't been very amused, that
Rimmer had lost his arm, and not to mention his watch, which had
turned out, to be a wind up, thank goodness! Unfortunately however,
thanks to the space crash, Lister's body had acquired, excessive
internal injuries, to his stomach, and Kryten had put him, on a diet of
lettuce leaves, and a grated carrot, for six months, until his stomach
injuries, healed over! And why Lister, just couldn't let Rimmer, suffer
his pain, via his internal injuries, for the best part of six months, to
teach him, a valuable lesson, of borrowing, the last human being's
body, without his permission, was way beyond me! And what was
more, according to the Cat, who was now, temporarily, in Rimmer's
hologramatic body, yes Plastic Percy (Kryten), had pressed him, into
service, yet again!
And then, there was the Timeslides incident, where a collection of
Lister's photographs, had mutated, which had made the scenario,
from any developed photographs, that Kryten had turned into slides,
become real! And as Kryten had set up the projector, that meant,
that they, could all climb into the slides, which had enabled Lister, to
accidentally, gatecrash, Rimmer's Brother: Frank's wedding, and
because, Lister, wouldn't move on, because he was blocking the
photograph, in question, from being taken, via Frank's officially
approved Wedding Photographer, Frank had gone, and beaten
Lister up, which definitely, proved, for once and for all, that Frank
Rimmer, was equipped, with a generally, by far, much nastier, and
tougher personality, than his younger Brother, Arnold's, personality,
which made Arnold Rimmer, come across, as a very nice and gently
person, indeed, which wasn't saying, very much, when it actually
came down to it, at the end of the day! But compared to Frank
Rimmer, Arnold Rimmer, had got, a very gentle personality, really,
when it actually came down to it, at the end of the day! Which again,
wasn't saying, very much, when it actually came down to it, at the end
of the day!
And to a certain extent, Lister was forever grateful, after encountering,
Frank Rimmer, for one very short and very sharp moment, that fate,
had decreed, Arnold Rimmer to be his bunkmate, and in time, his
hologramatic companion, than Frank Rimmer! He'd had a very lucky
escape, when it actually came down to it, at the end of the day! And he
had also become, a part of a couple's, skiing holiday. But unbeknownst,
to Lister, who had only clowned around, with the Cat, by testing
snowballs,
on one another, and had he hung around, a little bit longer, with the
couple,
in the skiing photograph, who had complained, about the photographs, that,
they had received, which had exposed, some drunken guys, been very sick,
indeed! This was because, Lister had sent his Eighteenth Birthday
photographs
in, to be developed, and he had received, someone else's, smegging, skiing
holiday, instead!
And Lister, had also interfered, with history, by climbing into, one of
Rimmer's
photographs, of a speech, that Adolf Hitler, had conducted, at Nuremberg!
And Lister, had disrupted it, by sticking one, on the leader of the Third
Reich,
which was a very big mistake, I can tell you! And he had also attacked
him,
and stolen his briefcase, which Von Stauffenberg, had originally, planted
on
him,
which was part of the bomb plot! And after finding out, that Hitler, liked
banana
and crisp sandwiches, for his lunch, and that, he was a little bit kinky,
where the
testicle handcuffs, were concerned (I won't go into great detail, where
that
is
concerned!)! And, after Kryten, had read his diary entry, where the bomb
plot,
was concerned, Lister had narrowly avoided, a major disaster, which would
have blown the Dwarf up, to Kingdom come, by throwing the briefcase, back
into the area, of the photograph, of Hitler's speech, at Nuremberg!
Fortunately
however, it had seemed, that nobody's lives, had been endangered, via the
explosion, at Nuremberg! Unfortunately however, thanks to the slip, in
time,
a
preserved copy, of The News Chronicle's, front page, now displayed, a
photograph
of Lister, which indicated, that he was definitely, a wanted man, by the
Nazi's, at the
time! In fact, he was probably, a major target, on the S.S's main target
list!
Fortunately however, Lister hadn't interfered, with the history of
mankind,
all that much, to make, all that much of a major difference, thank
goodness!
And, it had achieved his original aim, of contacting, his former younger
self,
in a Pub, with his former band: Smeg and The Heads, who were singing,
their all time classic hit: "OM", so that he could persuade him, to
manufacture:
The Tension Sheet, which had originally, been patented, by Fred "Thicky"
Holden (Rimmer's former bunkmate, at Boarding School, on Io), and he had
changed his destiny, by becoming a multi-millionaire! Only Lister,
couldn't
actually remember, anything about it, for the life of him, because Rimmer,
had
brought him back, to the Dwarf, because he hadn't wanted to spend, the
rest
of eternity, with his own miserable and dejected hologramatic self, with
Holly!
And, as Lister, had been hurtled back, through the realms, of time and
space, along with the Cat and Kryten, And Lister, had had no memories
of it, whatsoever! With the exception, after he had gone, and consumed,
far too much alcohol, of course!
And as a consequence, of this, he would usually, fall into, a very deep
slumber, indeed, where nothing, could, disturb him, whatsoever! And, he
would always, end up, having very weird dreams, indeed! And his dream
scenario, would always, consist of a very surreal, image, of Lister, been
seated, at a very long table, in a very highly appointed, dining room, in
a
great big Mansion, where he was always, sitting opposite, a very
beautiful,
and very glamorous woman, with long dark hair, who was attired, in a very
smart, black and white suit. And he had never seen, her before, in his
entire
life!
But, for some unknown reason, that was totally, and utterly, beyond him,
which for the life of him, that he couldn't understand, he had always,
felt
drawn, to her, and he had wanted, to offer her, his protection, from the
World. And he always, felt, an overwhelming urge, to make love to her,
immediately! He had never seen her before, in his life! He could not
understand, for the life of him, why this was, the case! Maybe, he had
been, in deep space, for far too long! Unfortunately however, along with a
middle-aged man, with a blond ponytail, whom he had also, never seen,
before, in his entire life, suddenly entered, the highly appointed, dining
room, in the great big Mansion. And Rimmer had always, appeared, in the
highly appointed, dining room, in the great big Mansion, and he had,
always,
prevented him, from getting, any closer, to the very beautiful and very
glamorous
woman, who was attired, in a very smart, black and white suit, in his
dreams,
by persuading him, to give up, everything, that he had, ever worked for!
Only
Lister, never knew, what it was, that he had, ever worked for, when it
actually
came down to it, at the end of the day!
And even though, Lister had always, ignored him, the dream scenario,
always, suddenly, collapsed around him, and the highly appointed dining
room, in the great big Mansion, would suddenly, become, the old
maintenance corridor, back, on the Dwarf, and he would suddenly, become,
a menial Chicken Soup Vending Machine Operator, all over again! And
Rimmer, would suddenly appear, as a Second Technician, and he would,
always, be picking on him, and bickering, at him, as per usual! And
Lister,
would always, do everything, in his power, to defy him, as per usual! And,
he would always, end up, waking up, in a cold sweat, and he would, always,
be shaking, all over!
And Rimmer and Holly, had had to inform him, all about it, especially, as
Rimmer, had temporarily, come back to life, due to the time dilation.
Unfortunately however, Lister, the Cat and Kryten, had been too
disorientated, to notice the event, in question. And due to Rimmer,
setting
off an explosion, in the Cargo bay, storage area, he had only gone, and
killed himself, all over again! And Holly, had, had to bring him back, as
a
hologram, all over again, once things, had eventually, calmed down, all
over
again!
And now, that Lister has finally managed, to get Kryten back, to his
quarters, carefully assisted, by the two faithful Skutters: Bob and Madge,
and he has got him linked up, to the maxi recharging unit, in his
quarters,
which will enable him, to have the re-charging time, that is absolutely
necessary, for him, for the time being!
And now that Lister, is finally on his way, to the Science Room, and his
mind, is flashing back, to his memories, of more happier times, in the
Science Room, along with his fellow Dwarfer's just exactly, what is their
current position, with Holly, in the Science Room, with regard, to their
present situation, on the Dwarf, where their route, back to Earth, is
concerned?
And will Lister, ever get a good nights sleep, and not come
to blows, with the Cat, before they set off, for Earth, once again?!
And exactly, just what, is the significance, of the long silver space
ship, especially, where the radio signal, and those two large silver
coffins, are concerned?!
