Well, Rebirth has finally explained some things.
There are spoilers below, so, if you haven't read GL Rebirth #3, don't

DC had to "rehabilitate" Hal. He'd essentially gone crazy, killed a slew
of
Green Lanterns, the Guardians, and attempted some evil things.
So, how to get his history back to the heroic side?
Infect him with an evil entity named Parallax who was hidden from others
so
it seemed Hal was the evil one, but he wasn't.
Hal can now get rid of this Parallax entity and he's the old Hal, heroic
and
innocent of the evil acts perpetrated by the evil entity.
This is a little too pat, but it gives DC its out. It also will probably
give the Guardians a way to reinstitute the yellow impurity/vulnerability
back into the rings.
It still doesn't tell me what they intend to do with Kyle, who I want to
continue being GL. With his different ring. And, will Batman and the
others completely absolve Hal and trust him again once they know he wasn't
responsible for his actions as Parallax?
This is at least interesting.
