We're relatively new to the arcane world of pulps, having only been
collecting for 5 years. Even so, we've noticed a real latter day drop
off in availability. Sadly, we're finding fewer and fewer
op****tunities to add to our collection, and truly rare issues almost
never appear for sale. Occasional gems are offered at auction,
Heritage being the most notable, but prices bid are often staggering.
I suppose that bodes well for the value of what we already have, but
certainly makes new acquisitions competitive...and costly! Alas, I
suppose one can't have it both ways.
Coin collecting has become extremely expensive, but there's no
shortage of "rare" coins for sale. Comic collecting is equally
expensive, and similarly, there's no shortage of "rare" comics,
either. The sine qua non of comics, Action #1, can be had anytime a
spare 50K (or more) is handy. If one has the money, almost any coin or
comic can be had...today! But try finding a Zeppelin Stories, or a
Fire Fighters, or even a decent early Shadow issue. There just aren't
any to be had. So, while we may love to see a broader interest in our
beloved hobby, there doesn't seem to be much available for collectors,
new or old!
Which doesn't mean that the search for some odd or esoteric issue
isn't fun. In fact, the greater reward is often the hunt itself, The
new and interesting places visited, and especially the friend****ps
made during the quest are far more valuable than the treasure found.
We're happy to have made many such friends over the years, and as
closed a community as it is, we're sure they're your friends, too. By
joining this group, we hope to make even more.
Although we live in Florida, we visit NYC several times a year, and
would like to plan a visit that corresponds with a meeting. Is there a
regular schedule? Meanwhile, we'd enjoy corresponding with fellow
pulpsters, so feel free to write. Our interests include V1#1s, sets,
and key issues. Hope to hear from you soon.
