In my mind, Strange Tales and The Fantastic Four
were Marvel's two greatest books of the silver age.
I began reading Strange Tales with the Jack Kirby
monster issues in 1959 and bought every issue as
it was published until it ceased in 1968. Doctor
Strange is my favorite Marvel character from the
1960s, but I never really liked the concept and
personality of Nick Fury, although I thought Jim
Steranko's artwork was a high point of the genre.
I liked the Human Torch stories better without The
Thing in them. Sometimes The Thing's attitude
could be just as annoying as Nick Fury's, although
at other times the pathos was very moving!
We need all of these issues reprinted in the Marvel
Masterworks hardbacks as soon as possible!
