Ravette oddity

by tchow@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Mar 29, 2008 at 09:59 PM

My sister-in-law bought me some books in the Ravette "Snoopy and the
Peanuts
Gang" series, and I noticed an oddity in it. These are British books, and
in particular English-language books, but some of the sound effects have
been altered. For example, when Snoopy boxes with Linus (this is in the
book "Be Prepared"), the sound effects are: "WUTSCH! PENG! WITSCH! UFF!
WAMM!" In the original, the sound effects are: "WHOOSH! POW! SWISH!
OOF! WHAM!"

It looks like Ravette took a foreign-language translation of the strip
and reinstated the English dialogue, but left the sound effects in the
other language. The English text is the same as the original and the
lettering looks more or less the same, but is sometimes shifted slightly
from its original position and thicker than the original.

The only other clue I can find as to what happened is that the
bibliographic information at the front of the book says:

Printed and bound for Ravette Limited,
3 Glenside Estate, Star Road,
Partridge Green, Horsham,
Sussex RH13 8RA
by Mateu Cromo Artes Grafica, s.a.

A web search reveals that "Mateu Cromo Artes Graficas" seems to be a
Spanish company. Curious, isn't it? Anybody have any more information
about what happened here?
