Remember when Peter wore the costume, he wasn't any bigger. Venom was only

big because Eddie Brock was big. Michelinie and McFarlane made sure to
show 
Brock working out prio to his first appearance.
Also, look at Carnage. he's not huge; he's just a skinny guy, because
Cletus 
Kasady is skinny.

It feeds off of adrenaline, which is why it always wanted Peter back. I

to think it also gives its host's cancer, as both Brock and Kasady
contacted 
it when they were separated with the symbiote.
