In general, I'm against the whole maiming/killing/status quo shaking
trend in comics, and some see this as the prototypical example.

But I think Conway was a pretty good writer, and his run was a strong
one; killing Gwen was, in my opinion and despite my prejudices, the
best thing that ever happened to her. It's certainly come to define
the character and her place in the Spider-Man mythos.

The worst thing? That would be the whole
****ting-around-with-the-Green-Goblin thing, which pretty much ruins
the character and what anyone-- Lee or Conway-- had tried to do with
her.

In fact, much of the nineties Spider-Man was basically raping earlier--
and better-- stories and ideas by Conway. The original clone saga?
Terrific!  The one from the nineties?  Eh, not so much.  (C'mon;
"Maximum Clonage"?) Death of the Green Goblin? Probably one of the
best Goblin stories ever, bar none! But
Norman-Osborn-as-Puppet-Master?

It was pretty damn lame.

Though I do have a soft-spot for the Dematties and Dezago work in the
post-Clone Saga pre-Mackie revamp era.

And let's not forget who gave us Firestorm.
