first use of "retcon"

by orionuk@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Jun 30, 2007 at 06:39 PM

Hi, everybody.

I was on these lists a lot about 8 years ago and I've come back to ask
if *anyone* knows how to track down the original use of the word
"retcon" as an abreviation of "retroactive continuity." I'm doing
background research for the second chapter of my dissertation and I'd
like to be able to say exactly where and in what context the combined
term, "retcon," was used, as opposed to "retroactive continuity,"
which seems to originate with Thomas.

Thre are a bunch of websites, including Wiki and Answers.com, that
claim that the word "was shortened to "retcon" by Damian Cugley in
1988 on USENET..." The RACM FAQ doesn't give any history of the term,
just the a definition, so I thought I'd ask here.

If you come up with anything, please either respond to this message or
email me personally.
