Bush Admin wants Gray wolf off protected-species list.
The gray wolf has made such a strong comeback that it should be removed
from federal protection from Maine to the Dakotas, Interior Secretary
Gail Norton said yesterday.
Norton announced a proposal to lift all protection under the Endangered
Species Act for Gray wolves in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin - where
the popultion has grown to 3,200 animals - as well as in at least 20
other states.
The proposal calls for states to assume management of the gray-wolf
populations in those states.
Conservationists acknowledged the revival of the gray wolf populations
to sustainable levels in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. But called
the idea shortsighted because it also removes protections in other
states
like New England, where the species is still threatened, An whould
allow the states to conduct wholesale shooting of wolves.
