Ahh, here's an illuminating interview I saw linked on the elfquest.com
website with W&R that shed some light on one of the questions, at
least, that I came away from "Searcher and the Sword" with.
<<But Shuna is going to start the beginning of the reconciliation with
the human race, and it's going to be a very long and hard journey, and
the focus won't always be on her, of course.">>
This answers my "failed quest" question-- she is intended to bridge
the gap, and it was, indeed, the beginning.
As about the story feeling "self contained" (which it did, to me,
which led to my questions about the success-- or lack thereof-- of
Shuna's quest), Richard adds--
<<but I think, correctly so, they wanted it to be somewhat complete in
itself so that whenever future volumes might come out, they did not
depend on this one. So Wendy boiled it down and turned it into a 96
page story that can easily lead to others but that also stands on its
own, which is a good thing for the sake of new readers.">>
"they" being DC.
So it had to work into the story but also feel stand-alone. I think it
was less successful as a stand-alone just because it offers a
pessimistic view of the possibility for good elf-human relations if
left where the book ends. But as part of a larger tale, of a _start_,
it works very well indeed.
Part two of the interview is also a good read:

Especially when they discuss my favourite scene in the whole book.
Wendy speaking:
<<what would Skywise do? Would he grin? Would he wink? Would he walk
away? What would push this over the top? And Richard said, 'Well, if
it was me, I would go sshhhh...' And I said, 'I'd kill you!' So I knew
that was what would put it over the top, and I put that 'I'd kill you'
expression on Cutter's face!">>
Hilarious. It's so true. Maddeningly true.
I also like the story at the end where Red Sonja meets Klinger.
Someone should draw *that*.
Tavie
really working now, honest
