New Warriors #9 - "Thrashed, Part One" (Writer: Kevin Grevioux,
Penciler: Paco Medina, Inker: Juan Vlasco,
Colorist:
Marte Gracia)
After anothe battle with supervillians in which Night Thrasher is
nowhere to be found, Jubilee vents to Jono. Meanwhile, Night
Thrasher continues to be mysterious and devious.
This is a slight uptick from last issue, but it does continue to
highlight one of the problems of the book. The cast is just too
big and too undefined. I have trouble keeping most of the characters
and their abilities straight. It doesn't help that most of them are
barely in the issue, or that they suddenly decided to completely
redesign Wondra's costume for some reason. We're already 9 issues
in and we're not really getting to know these characters. We get two
or three pages on intensive backstory on the cops that have been
investigating the New Warriors, but little on the characters that make
up the team itself.
Now, some of the plotlines here are still engaging... I do find
myself curious enough about what Night Thrasher's planning to keep
reading, but it can only hold on for so long. There are also a few
more
minor issues, I'm also not entirely sure Grevioux has Jono's voice
done
(even ignoring the lack of a comically transcribed british accent).
And seriously, the New Warriors better not expect to keep their
identities secret for very long if they keep shouting out each other's
real names in the middle of fights.

Well, that's it for this week folks. Next week, according to the
shipping list, it's another skip week. Nothing I'm interested in
buying.
See you next time...
