Unreachable Star Reviews May 7th, 2008 (SPOILERS)

by Peter Dimitriadis <ghost@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 7, 2008 at 05:19 PM

This is our 258th edition. One book today, and I don't have a lot
to say about it, so let's get right to it.

This week we have...

Young X-Men #2 - 3 Stars

Young X-Men #2 - "New Mutants" (Writer: Mark Guggenheim, Artist:
Yanick Paquette, Inker: Ray Snyder, Colorist: Rob
                 Schwager)

After a little bit of training, Cyclops sends the Young X-Men out
to kill some of the supposedly weaker New Mutants.

Okay, we know something is seriously up here with Cyclops. If he's
not a fraud or something, he's being written exceedingly poorly, but
I think we can take it for granted he's not what he seems. What's
worse is that nobody seems to question it very much. One of the
characters gives a token "Hey, aren't they our friends and don't
the X-Men not kill?" but they all just take the answer at face value.
Even accepting that killing might be necessary in today's time, and
accepting that the New Mutants might be evil, there's no real answer
given about why _they_ in particular need killing. Nor does anybody
question the pretty blatant suspicious clue hanging out there. Now,
one member of the team is known for not being the brightest bulb,
another is generally quiet and reserved and accepts authority, another
is young and impulsive, one a criminal, and the last wasn't part of
the original plan to begin with. So if the point of it all is that
whoever is playing Cyclops picked the ones most susceptible to being
manipulated, that might be fair enough, but as a general principle,
I don't like plots that require the characters to be idiots.

The plot's not horrible, but there's not a lot to go with either.
It's mostly just drawing out the mystery of what's going on, and
there isn't much character work beyond what's required to drive the
plot forward.

Still willing to see where it goes, but I was hoping this title would
have impressed me by now, and so far it hasn't.

Review: 3 stars

Well, that's it for this week folks. Next week, according to the
shipping list, there's two, maybe three books. There's Serenity:
Better Days #3, newuniversal: shockfront #1, and maybe Genext #1.

See you next time...
